2.The Brief
• For my pack design I have decided to use a pentagonal shape box as it has 5 sides and corners. This will work as a good solution to the packaging of 5 doughnuts as the doughnuts fit in the five corners of the box properly. The 5 senses:
• Site – My package is visually aesthetic and shows the products on the package cover.
• Sound – I have found a way to make my package appeal to the sense of hearing sound by installing a mechanism that is found in birthday and Valentines Day cards. Therefore when the package cover is open it will play a tune.
• Touch, Smell and Taste – for my package to appeal to these 3 senses I have made five holes in the package cover, this is ok as this is just a temporary package container. The holes in the packaging will allow the customer after purchase to touch, smell and even taste the doughnuts using a finger to get in there.
3.My Package innovations:
• Package stored and stacked flat before made up which saves space.
• Package does not use any glue but rather uses clips made form the template to be made up. This will allow quick and easy making up of package by bakery staff at Spar.
• Package has perforations that run on the base of package that allows package to be cut up and be used as single serving holders (trays) for each doughnut.
Design Process
My first thumbnail idea for my packaging was a round box. For the cover of the box, i was going to design as a big doughnut. I encounted a few problems with the round box such as a making a round box template as well as there was a lot of space wastage.
I therefore decided to make the box pentogonal as it was much more rigid and stronger as well as it solved the other problems.
I then illustrated diagrams to see how the doughnuts would fit before designing the template.
left is a template for a octogonal box template from which i got some insperation and ideas from for my own box.
My first atempt at the pentogonal template was not gud at it wud not work as it had no self cliping mechanism and a few unessasary folds.
I then had a look at other boxes with cliping and locking mechanism and found the 1 below which i used in my final template design. The locking mechanism allow for qiuck erection of package at the Spar deli as there is no glue used. Simply fold and lock into place.
Brief 2: Vitamins for Seniors
3D Rendering
Technical Drawing
Information Graphics
Rationale:
The name of my vitamins is “Revita” has 2 meanings revitalize and re vitamin – putting the vitamins back into your body. For my design of a vitamin container for the seniors, my design was almost entirely influenced by the challengers elderly people face like arthritis and complicated dosage plans. Therefore my vitamin container contains the following innovations:
•An ergonomically designed container shape that’s easy to hold with sufficient grip and fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.
•Easy to open flip up lid, no turning repetitive movements needed just flip up lid.
•A digital dosage indicator, once you hear the Indicator beep find product and read the dosage that it displays on the lid.
The Cost implications to produce these vitamin containers are low.
Mass produced using the standard PVC plastic using a mould container would cost about R 1.00 each excluding digital lid.
The digital lid would also be cheap if mass produced because bulk is cheaper.
The digital watch like mechanism incased in PVC plastic can be made cheaply for around R 2.00 a lid if mass produced.
Therefore the total cost of a single container if mass-produced would be R 3.00.
Method of use.
Step1: Hear the digital dosage indicator lid beep.
Step 2: Once you hear the Indicator beep find product and read the dosage that it displays on the lid. The digital dosage indicator beeps at 3 different times with 3 different dosages:
Morning 6:00 dosage 2
Midday 10:00 dosage 1
Night 19:00 dosage 4
Step 3: To open container simply push up lid until it unclips.
Step 4: Take indicated dosage. Do not exceed the indicated dosage.
Design Process
When doing preliminary drawings for my rough ideas I considered the aspect of comfort and ease of use for people suffering from arthritis. I thought of a shape that would fit very comfortable into the hand.
My ideas were influenced by the challenges that seniors with arthritis face.
